I had some creative energy today and love the direction this went. I wish I had a better background to shoot against besides white brick, very challenging.
The challenge became how to suspend it without using chain because I wanted the chain to imitate a lamp shade. The solution came to me to use steel plumbing pipe and run the wire through the pipe into the ceiling. The black pipe gave it the industrial feel that I was going for and gives it a modern look. I added the union between the two pipes to emphasize the pipe junction. I used 1/2" black pipe and the chain is from a bunch of places I've been collecting it.
Little did I know that Build It Green NYC's Gowanus location would be flooded by 8 feet of water from the toxic canal nor that my own new minivan (pictured proudly in my last post hauling a 10-ft scaffolding plank with back door completely closed!) would be flooded in 5 feet of seawater from New York Harbor. So life became a little complicated...

Both the Battery Tunnel (Hugh Carey Tunnel) and underpass to FDR flooded in 20 min when the tide surged.

I was finally able to get over to Build It Green the second week in November (no gas, no power, and my family still re-located to a temporary home in Bushwick) to learn that the door we chose for the chandy did not survive the flood waters from Hurricane Sandy. So we found another one and decided this chandy was going TO HAPPEN come HELL or HIGH WATER!

This antique door survived the flood waters Sandy caused in 2012

I squeezed the door into my Mazda M5 rental car and managed to get it back to the studio where we went to work on it. At one end there was a chunk of wood that rotted and had come off that we needed to mend and patch. The door was stripped and planed to its original state which was still in good condition overall, not even compromised by the flood water.

One end had damage to the wood.

We used a wood filler to patch the broken end and sanded it down after removing the top layer of the wood with a planer. We also patched the holes left by some remaining hardware and a hook. The back was reinforced with pieces of ply wood to support the weight of the pendants.
It took us a couple of days but we managed to clean it up and stain it a beautiful ebony color and add over 80 pendants!!

We finished it and loaned it to Etsy for their Holiday Pop Up Shop in Soho, it hung above the bar and was a great source of light for shoppers.

Now it has finally made it's way back home to Build It Green NYC's Gowanus location, newly cleaned up and reopened after the storm. It now hangs above the cash wrap in the store and we are so proud of its new home!
Check out these shelves we built from salvaged scaffolding planks:

Pretty cool huh? They're very sturdy too! I've been wanting to experiment with the steel pipe for years and now realizing how easy it is, you'll definitely be seeing some pipe incorporated into my chandy designs soon. I found 10 planks of old scaffolding and managed to squeeze them into my new minivan (oh yes, I've got wheels now...watch out NYC!) to take them back to the office. They barely fit but we just able to shut the back...

The console folds down so I can fit 10-foot long planks in the van!
So in one trip to BIG last week I met the founder Justin Green and Jaclyn Jablkowski, communications manager and they suggested they may need lighting for their new event space. I excitedly volunteered to donate a fixture and they happily accepted! I'm so excited! Here are some pics of the new space they will be renting out to various groups for events and weddings. Here is a little preview, they are still working on it but check out what a cool space it is!
look at that ceiling, it's about 35-40 feet high!

We found an old door to recycle into a chandelier and I will building it onsite since the door will unfortunately not fit into the van. But stay tuned for some video footage of the assembly soon!!

We moved our production back to Brooklyn to the Navy Yard at Grand Avenue & Flushing, and we love our new space!!! I've been working to get everything organized and set up for holiday production. That said, we've taken a pause (hopefully briefly) to hunker down for Hurricane Sandy today and now it looks like tomorrow as well. Second hurricane evacuation for us in 15 months...Ahhemmm time to start paying attention to our role in global warming people.

So maybe I've watched too many movies, but can't decide if it's more day after tomorrow or perfect storm or maybe a little i am legend minus the zombies. Although it is Halloween in a couple days so zombies are probable at this point. That is my forecast. Very scientific, I know.

Here is the shot of NY Harbor from my apartment in Battery Park:

Notice that the Battery Tunnel and Hugh Carey tunnels are still open and holding up not too much water down there yet. We are in Zone A that was evacuated last night but have decided to stick it out.

For those of you waiting for orders...we will do our best to get into the office this week pending power outages. I assure you we will finish your orders and get them out as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience with us and being such awesome customers!
We have been BUSY busy making lots of orders. Oh yeah, so many orders were coming in that I had to get some help down in Austin, Texas. One of my best friends that I grew up with, Danny Ehr is an amazing craftsman and offered to start making chandies too.
Yesterday on of our light fixtures was featured in the New York Times!!! We made this custom pendant chandelier for a store called Populence on 8th Street and Fifth Avenue in the West Village.
It's difficult to tell in the picture but we used copper hardware with vintage style turn-knobs, it looks so cool.
We have been working on many cool new things, check out our website for lots of new designs.
Birth control? REALLY?! Did you see the weekend update Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers Saturday? Awesome. So let me get this straight: don't give out birth control, don't allow abortions, and then don't subsidize any medical, education, or aid for any of these children. Um okay. Sounds a like winning plan to me.

I saw the end of the movie Idiocracy last night on IFC. My husband and I always joke that it's becoming true of our country. When he saw a commercial of Kraft's new MiO water flavor drops, he flipped, "OMG it's happening!" Me: "But Brawndo's got what plants crave!"

Today I'm excitedly awaiting the arrival of a piece of art from RACEPONYstudio. I'm going to make a light fixture with it!! The artist, Timothy Belcher has to be one of the nicest guys ever. We met on Etsy and decided to do a collaboration which is going to be wicked awesome (sorry, too much coffee this morning). Etsy rules. Nicest. People. Ever. I swear I don't work for them but as much as I've been promoting them lately, maybe I need to send them an invoice.
I will post pics as soon as it's underway! Stay tuned...urbanchandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07808618479647500664noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7652019656077194067.post-40609927738530860672012-02-18T08:10:00.000-08:002012-02-18T08:10:18.561-08:00Etsy & Consumerism ApocalypseI've been swamped with orders on Etsy! I'm not even kidding, I've shipped 12 orders in last 10 days. What is even crazier than the fact that I am now a chandelier-making machine is that the customers buying my stuff on Etsy are not your typical little housewives shopping for handmade kids' clothes and knitted scarves. I'm talking a rockstar drummer, a celebrity athlete, several interior design firms, retail shops, bars/restaurants, and just dudes (regular ole dudes!).

I think more people are jumping on Etsy to find new and interesting things that don't end up everywhere like the Bjursta dining room table that 9 of 10 people I know own, thank you Ikea. But maybe it's more than just that. I think it also says something about our purchasing behavior. A few years ago, we wouldn't buy anything that wasn't USDA certified, UL rated, or FDA approved. Now I feel I trust something more coming from another mom than I would from another big corporate name. I've read Fast Food Nation and Skinny Bitch. I know how it works now. I'm no longer naive enough to believe these agencies have my best interests at heart.

I'm not going to lie, I kind of love it. It's like being a part of a revolution. Viva The Small Business! Viva Urban Chandy! Viva Etsy!

Thinking about it further...Etsy is a great demonstration of individuals learning a craft. I've seen some amazing craftsmanship over the last few months while shopping my face off on Etsy. The other night on the Grammys, Dave Grohl went off on a tangent about "the human element of music is what's important...and learning to do your craft, that's the most important thing for people to do...." This seemed to strike a note with me. Sorry but bear with me here, America has been criticized in the last few years for lacking skilled workers and craftsman. Maybe Etsy is the new Ayn Rand world of craftspersons coming together to create the new America we will live in. Was that a jump or what? LOL Maybe, maybe not. I can certainly tell you I NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS would have predicted my jump from earning 6 figures in branded wholesale apparel sales to making chandeliers to sell on Etsy. Well, 3 years ago I never would have. But here I am...and I'm loving it. urbanchandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07808618479647500664noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7652019656077194067.post-34416782039897752202012-01-30T17:44:00.000-08:002012-01-30T17:44:21.775-08:00Staining Merbau hardwoodIt's been a few weeks since my last post, I've been slammed with orders - crazy! But I'm trying to experiment more with the reclaimed hardwood floor that I now have stashed all over our Manhattan apartment LOL (my husband is not nearly as thrilled about this as I am).

The wood is Merbau, a reddish-brown hardwood and the underside is unfinished and has grooves in it to connect with the other pieces for making a floor. I was excited to use the underside as the front of a chandelier because I thought it looked really rustic and kind of industrial which is the look I love so much.

So I tried out the charcoal stain on the Merbau and it turned out pretty cool. Because the wood is darker than the birch plywood I've been staining, it looks very different.
More posts to come very soon! I am aiming to finish the chandelier with the raw gemstones this week so pics are coming shortly.urbanchandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07808618479647500664noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7652019656077194067.post-34924613178826527022012-01-11T17:12:00.000-08:002012-01-11T17:12:13.676-08:00Orders are coming in!Or maybe I should say pouring in YEAH! I'm so excited and a little overwhelmed. I finally finished the two fixtures that I've been working on for weeks now. The one made from the reclaimed hardwood floor is so cool! I ended up cutting the big piece in half to make two chandeliers. Here are some photos:
The first image is of the big piece that I purchased from Build It Green NYC. You can see that I cut it in half to make a smaller fixture. I used antique brass hardware on this one, it went really well with the raw wood. You're actually seeing the bottom of the hardwood floor as the face of the chandelier. I left the metal connector pieces on there because I felt like it gives it a more raw feel. I love this one!! Will be tough to let go if it sells:(

The other project was a more sophisticated fixture in the new grey stain I made. I'm quite happy with this one as well.
I used all the same size clear globe bulbs and actually lined them up this time. The globes are big so they're touching which gives it a unique look.
I'm currently working on 6 more orders!! Gotta get to work:)
Many. Projects. So. Much. Fun.I'm so excited about chandies and wood stain right now! I've a couple new discoveries to share:

1. Mixing stains is my new favorite thing!! I've come up with two colors to add to my offerings: a warm grey that is totally cool, but still workable for us not-so-very-modern folks and a mahogany that is rich, yet still contemporary. I shared below my mix for the warm grey and now here is my mixture for the mahogany: 2 coats Ebony with a top coat of Gunstock. Awesomeness.

2. After visiting the newest outpost of BIG NYC (Build It Green NYC) in Gowanus, I have now multiple projects in the works with my wood findings. I found a chunk of hardwood floor that still has the metal connectors on the bottom, so cool! I'm going to make the bottom the front of the chandelier. But it's huge right now, I'm deciding whether to just make a giant chandy or cut it in half to make two. Check it out:

My friend is currently driving cross-country in an RV with her husband right now - so fun! So she also happens to have an online shop called sundaybrunchdress.com. A couple days ago she called me from the road because a customer purchased one of her dresses to wear on NYE, so I went next door to mail it for her. This is the first time I've been to her place since she purchased the desk from Crate & Barrel. So I'm expecting to see the desk I thought she purchased, but instead see this desk. haha! I had the wrong desk! But it is so cool, a gorgeous desk. It looks amazing in her apartment, she has such great taste.urbanchandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07808618479647500664noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7652019656077194067.post-4794602023065241132011-12-26T09:51:00.000-08:002011-12-31T06:25:20.929-08:00My Newest Stain Color: Warm GreyChristmas is over! I always feel a mixture of sadness that the holiday season is ending and sheer joy that the stress of dealing with holiday shopping, family gatherings, and eating/drinking is finally done. So I'm getting back to chandelier creations...

In the midst of holiday madness, I was obsessing over the stain for the wood for my newest client's dream chandelier. As I mentioned in a previous post she wants the look of a desk made from recycled telephone poles, but the weathered wood look is very difficult to re-create using plywood. However after a couple trips to Home Depot and some scrap pieces of wood I think I've done it!

So first I bought the Classic Grey (271) stain by Minwax but it was too light to show up under the brown stain (Special Walnut). It was a cool color though, note to self for another project. I will post pics of it next post. Back to Home Depot where I learned from my friendly little guy in the paint department that Minwax does custom stains, who knew!? So we made a color called charcoal to give the wood the grey undertone needed to get that greyish, weathered telephone pole color. One note: the custom stain liquid is much thicker than the regular stain by Minwax, so you have to use much less than the regular stuff. My first attempt was too dark, i.e. used too much of the stuff.

So I tried it again using much less of the custom charcoal stain and then immediately taking off the excess with paper towels. After it dried I added a light coat of the Special Walnut and voila!

Now I have a very warm grey color that is beautiful. An exciting start to this unique chandelier that will involve gems! Stay tuned for more updates on this beauty in a couple days.
She is a jewelry designer and used to be the senior buyer of fine jewelry for Barneys New York!! I'm so excited to work with her!

Off to do research on wood stains and recycled wood, but this desk from Crate & Barrel is my new inspiration. I love the greyish color of the wood from recycled telephone poles. I can't wait to see it in person, my friend just bought this and it was delivered yesterday. Hopefully we will get to see it this afternoon.

urbanchandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07808618479647500664noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7652019656077194067.post-85143937070409740532011-12-07T08:53:00.001-08:002011-12-31T06:26:02.678-08:00Lo and Behold! My friend Lo lives upstairs from us and has been a great friend and neighbor to us in the last year since we had a baby. She constantly offers to take the dog out, babysit, and practice her spray-tanning skills on me...she's quite good at it and I get a free tan in the middle of winter! Well and let's face it, in the middle of summer too considering I don't really sunbathe anymore. Also, did I mention Lo is also a makeup artist? She has spruced up this working mommy on more than one occasion for parties, shoots, and special occasions. What an amazing friend to have living right next door!

Anyway, I wanted to do something special for her as a thank you for all that she does for us and decided I would try to make a chandelier for her. The challenge: her apartment is all white! I had only been making chandeliers with a dark, rustic feel and her apartment is anything but. So I started with a white stain that is called "pickled" that I found at Pearl Paint on Canal Street. After staining the wood and sanding it, I used all white wire and cord grips to re-create the original urban chandy but using only silver hardware. The result was quite chic compared to the more rustic original:

I am so pleased that she loves it! We installed a dimmer on her switch so that she can control the light - for aesthetic purposes as well as practicality. She always needs to control the lighting depending on the services she is providing to clients who come to her home for makeup application or spray tanning. Now she can tan clients at night...including this mommy who can't ever peel away until after 8pm!urbanchandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07808618479647500664noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7652019656077194067.post-22441750847677381482011-12-07T08:38:00.001-08:002011-12-07T08:52:20.637-08:00How high or low to hang a chandelierI did some research on the matter and of course the answer to this question is pretty subjective and also a matter of style. Generally it is recommended that a chandelier hang anywhere from 30" to 36" above the tabletop in a room with an 8-foot ceiling. Then the opinions start to vary. Some designers feel that you should add 3" to the suspension height for every foot above the standard 8 feet where as others still believe that 30-36" is still the recommended height regardless of ceiling height or room size.

When not hanging a chandelier over a table, the general rule of thumb is 7 feet above the floor. I think when hanging anything, you should hang it where it looks best and mind not to hang it too low where people may bump into it. Also remember the lower you hang a fixture the bigger it will look and the opposite is also true, the higher you hang it the smaller it will appear. So it is also important to take the size of the room into consideration in proportion to your fixture.urbanchandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07808618479647500664noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7652019656077194067.post-75734289285936176612011-12-07T08:28:00.001-08:002011-12-07T08:37:42.712-08:00The Brooklyn Heights ProjectAfter posting the picture of my office chandelier on Etsy, my first commissioned fixture was for a couple in Brooklyn Heights that live in an amazing loft space. They were renovating and had just purchased a reclaimed barnwood dining table from West Elm. They wanted a large chandelier that would coordinate back with their new table.

This is the chandelier hung in their dining space, so cool! They said it was their favorite part of all of the renovations, happiness:) This fixture is 24"x36" at the base and the longest bulb hangs down 4 ft from the base. They have very high ceilings (10.5 ft) so we made the wire longer to hang it directly over the table. My next post is about how we came to decide how low/high to hang it.

It all started with a light fixture that I created for my office in Dumbo, Brooklyn. I was looking for something modern, kind of industrial, but affordable as I was on a tight budget. I couldn't find anything that I was looking for so I decided I would make my vision on my own.

The response to the fixture I made for my office (see above image) was so great that I actually got a few custom orders. So here goes my adventures in chandelier-making!
